The Witcher 3 HDR Patch Causes Graphical Downgrade On PS4 Pro But Results Into Better Performance

Draw distances for foliage and shadows have been affected in some areas.

The Witcher 3 is a beautiful game, and when CD Projekt RED recently released a patch that made it compatible with HDR on the PS4 and PS4 Pro, it was made even more beautiful. And while for the most part the patch works as intended, according to a report by EuroGamer, the game’s apparently suffering from some visual downgrades as a by-product.

Apparently, as a result of the patch, in 4K mode the game’s draw distances for both shadows and foliage for trees and plants have reduced, and as a result, some players are experiencing pop-ins for both those things. That seems to be the only deterioration the game’s visuals have suffered due to the patch, but it has been pretty noticeable, apparently.

However, when playing in 1080p mode, none of these issues occured and infact performance was reportedly better; even regions like Crookback Bog now run at 30fps.

That said, the same downgrades have not been noticed on the game’s Xbox One or Xbox One X version, which also has HDR support, of course. CD Projekt RED have not commented on this issue so far, but we’d expect them to release a patch tackling this issue sooner or later. Have you experiences these issues since the patch?
