Nintendo dropped a bombshell at the end of its E3 2019 Direct presentation when it confirmed that a sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is in development. It’s still early yet – the sequel doesn’t even have a name. But it is interesting to hear that the team is inspired by Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2.
IGN spoke to Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma about what titles the younger staff on the development team were playing and what inspired them. Aonuma replied, “[Something] I did hear that a lot of people were playing was Red Dead Redemption 2.” How this will affect the new Zelda game wasn’t made clear.
Then again, when questioned on the open worlds that inspired the whole team, Aonuma said, “When I was working on Breath of the Wild, the director [Hidemaro Fujibayashi] was playing Skyrim.” The game’s exploration and freedom does remind one of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim. Now the real question is what improvements are being made to the current Breath of the Wild blueprint with the sequel.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has sold over 14.27 million units since launch, becoming the best-selling title in the franchise till date. Check out our review of the title here.
