The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2’s Name Hasn’t Been Revealed Because it Contains Hints About the Story

Though the game will of course have its own proper subtitle, that's not going to be revealed just yet, since Nintendo wants to hold back any potential story spoilers.

Since the moment it was announced, Nintendo has been calling it the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, while fans have taken to calling it Breath of the Wild 2. The game is, of course, going to have its own separate subtitle, but it’s one that hasn’t yet been confirmed, with Nintendo continuing to refer to it without a proper name even in its latest showing yesterday.

So why exactly is that so? Speaking with IGN, Nintendo of America’s senior product marketing manager Bill Trinen said that Nintendo isn’t ready to unveil the game’s official name yet because the subtitle contains hints and clues about the story- which is info that they don’t want getting out just yet.

“As for why we’re holding back on the name, you’ll just have to stay tuned because, obviously, Zelda names are kind of important,” Trinen said. “Those subtitles… they start to give little bits of hints about maybe what’s going to happen.”

At its most recent showing, Breath of the Wild 2 showed off new gameplay footage, while also confirming aerial gameplay sections that seem to be taking cues from Skyward Sword.

The sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – whatever it ends up being called – will launch for the Nintendo Switch some time in 2022.
