The Last of Us Part 1

Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Part 1 was finally announced at last month’s Summer Game Fest showcase, ending months of rumors. While some are looking forward to re-experiencing the journey of Joel and Ellie with improved graphics and controls, others are less enthusiastic (and not without good reason).

Taking to Twitter, animator Robert Morrison refuted statements of the remake being “just a cash grab.” He noted, “Actually, it’s the most meticulously built and crafted project that I have ever seen or been a part of in my entire career. The highest level of care and attention to detail possible.” Which certainly can’t be denied on the visual front, whether it’s the increased details or native 4K/60 FPS gameplay.

Whether it’s “worth” picking up or not is subjective, which Morrison also discussed in a follow-up tweet. “The price of the game is out of my control and worth is subjective to each individual. You can decide for yourself if you want it or not. All I’m saying is I am in awe of the work that an amazing group of people did on the project. A tremendous amount of passion was put into it.”

As for why Naughty Dog decided to remake the first game, its other projects still being in pre-production at the time is allegedly part of the reason, according to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier on MinnMax’s podcast a while back. It also reportedly provides a large amount of the studio with something to do while also getting “familiar” with the console hardware.

The Last of Us Part 1 is out on September 2nd for PS5 with a PC version also in the works. Stay tuned for more details and gameplay in the coming weeks.
