The rise of crowdfunding has been something of a godsend for indie developers who can’t manage to find major publishers or backers for their titles. It’s also produced some true oddities, with one such one being the seemingly never ending amount of funds coming to spaceship simulator Star Citizen.
The game was already the most crowdfunded game in existence, but has since blown so far past that it’s broken its own records multiple times. As announced via the official website, the game has now passed a staggering $250 million dollars in funding. For reference, the last stretch goal was for $65 million, meaning it’s more than tripled its initial loftiest targets. Not bad for a game that’s technically not out of Alpha just yet.
Star Citizen is running in Alpha now via PC and will release in the future at some point maybe. There’s also a single player beta that’s planned to be released in Q2 2020.
