Nintendo Dropping Support For Video on Demand Services on Wii In January 2019

Psst, Nintendo, this would be a great time to put Netflix on Switch.

Nintendo Wii

The Wii is over ten years old now, but it can be easy to forget just how pervasive the device is. For many, it’s the only console they have ever bought, and lots of people ended up using the console to watch video streaming services such as Netflix. Even though the Wii lacks HD output support, there may still be many who are using the Wii for that kind of use.

However, they will have to stop doing so come early next year, because apparently, Nintendo is about to stop support for all online streaming services on the console in January 2019. A Reddit user received an email from Netflix informing them that Nintendo is going to pull video streaming app support from the Wii at the end of 2019, which means services like Netflix, as well as any other that were available on Wii, will no longer be supported.

“Unfortunately, Nintendo will suspend all video streaming services on Wii—including the Netflix Channel—after January 31, 2019,” the email says. “We hope you’ll soon enjoy an even better Netflix experience with additional features on a supported device.”

For now, if you want Netflix on a Nintendo device, your choices are limited to Wii U and 3DS. The Switch still does not have Netflix, even though the media app situation on the device seems to be slowly improving. That, or you might want to look at, I don’t know, literally any other electronic device on the market, because chances are, it almost certainly runs Netflix.
