After Minecraft Dungeons went with an action RPG looter approach, Mojang is seemingly going the real-time strategy route with its next spin-off. Former Giant Bomb co-founder/editor Jeff Gerstmann, who recently started a podcast, revealed in a recent Twitch stream (at 1:19:00) that it’s a real-time strategy game.
It’s currently in testing under a codename with Gerstmann seeing a few screenshots and receiving a rough breakdown of the gameplay. Instead of having a bird’s eye view of the action, players reportedly control a Steve-esque unit on the field in third-person and order units around to fight enemies like Piglins. A story and cutscenes are also apparently included (though the report seen indicates that much of it is unfinished).
Could this be announced at the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase? Gerstmann said it seemed “far enough along” that an announcement could be possible before adding “But who the hell knows?” “I don’t know what their plans are for it. I just kind of saw screens and got kind of a rough breakdown of what it looks like.” He did agree that the gameplay could be compared to something like the Overlord series.
Windows Central’s Jez Corden also privately reached out to GamingLeaksAndRumors moderator Crusader3456 to clarify that “this is NOT Project Indus, the strategy game from Oxide Games”, which is rumored to be a 4X, turn-based strategy game. Instead, it’s a completely “separate project.” We’ll have to wait for more details and an official announcement in the meantime so stay tuned.
The Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase is set for June 12th at 10 AM PT. An Xbox Games Showcase Extended is also taking place on June 14th.
