Fortnite Battle Royale (2)

Epic Games recently announced that Fortnite‘s battle royale mode would be making its way to iOS and Android devices, along with the delivering the news that that version of the game would have cross-play functionality with the game’s PC and PS4 versions.

After questions started emerging on why the same wasn’t possible for the Xbox One version as well, Microsoft and Epic have now confirmed that Fortnite on Xbox One will indeed have cross-play functionality as well- only not with the PS4 version of the game. “We have been working closely with the team at Epic Games for some time to bring this functionality to all current and future versions of Fortnite and expect it to be available on Xbox along with other platform,” Microsoft clarified in a statement to The Verge. “Microsoft has long been a leading voice in encouraging the adoption of cross-platform play and the potential of connecting players across PC, mobile and all consoles.”

Meanwhile, Epic Games also confirmed the same in a blog post. “We’re happy to announce today that in partnership with our friends at Microsoft, Fortnite will feature cross-play, cross-progression, and cross-purchase, between Xbox One, PC, Mac, iOS and (in the next few months) Android,” the post reads. “Contrary to what may have been implied, Microsoft has long been a leading voice in supporting cross-platform play, connecting players across PC, mobile and all consoles. We’ve been working together with them over the last several months to make this possible and will bring this functionality to Fornite players on Xbox right along with other platforms.”

That’s definitely good news, and seems to be more in line with Microsoft’s positive stance on cross-play functionality in their video games. It’s disappointing still that the game’s PS4 and Xbox One versions won’t have that functionality with each other, but something’s better than nothing, right? One step at a time.
