Fortnite Developer Wants To Change The Game’s Endgame

Epic Games wants to end the hegemony of tower building in Fortnite's endgame.

Fortnite Battle Royale

I love Fortnite, I really do, but I have to admit I dread the end game in every battle royale game. See, getting to the end game isn’t that difficult if you know what you’re doing, but once you’re there, it becomes a bit of a shit show. The strategies all seem to rely exclusively on spamming two things, both in support of one another: build towers, then spam rocket launchers from on there. Which means that if you aren’t lucky enough to wrest a rocket launcher in the early game, or don’t like building (or aren’t good at it), you’re not winning.

Epic Games seems to agree that this is a problem, because in a new blog post, they admit that the end game in the battle royale mode is not conducive to the variety of play styles the game can otherwise support.

“It’s important to support a variety of late game strategies, that don’t boil down to “just build lol”. We strongly believe that the evolution of Fortnite supports a wide range of play styles and counterplay. Currently, the superiority of shotguns, rockets, and uncapped building are such a dominant play style in the final circle that most other strategies are being drowned out,” they said. And I’m not the one who bolded that text, they did, so it’s clear they feel a bit strongly about this.

What are the changes they will make to fix this? Well, nerfing the weapons that are spammed the most, such as the rocket launcher and shotgun, are listed as the obvious fixes, but they are also experimenting with things like resource caps (so you can’t just spam towers upon towers). They mention they will be inviting community engagement and input, which is also good.

Just, for the love of god, make it so that it’s possible to do well in Fortnite without having to build the Taj Mahal in the last 30 seconds of the game.
