Expect the unexpected is always a good rule of thumb with Hideo Kojima games, and it doesn’t look like he and his team at Kojima Productions plan on bucking that trend anytime soon. The original Death Stranding is a very unusual game, to say the very least, and appropriately enough, it seems like it’s sequel is also going to try and keep surprising players.

That’s according to Kojima himself, who, shortly following the announcement of Death Stranding 2, shared a few more brief (and pretty vague) details on the game on is Brain Structure Podcast, saying that thanks to improvements in technology, the development team is able to do things that it couldn’t do in the original game.

“It’s my second time working with Norman [Reedus] and the technology has really improved over the last three years,” Kojima said (transcribed by MP1st). “Things that were impossible before are now possible. So we have been really challenging ourselves. It’s not just a regular sequel in that sense.”

Kojima went on to say that though he can’t say much about the game at this point, Death Stranding 2 will attempt to strike a balance between being nostalgic and new in an attempt to appeal to both new and returning players.

“I can’t say much yet,” he said. “I believe a lot of people liked Sam, and I’m hoping those people return to DS2. And in order to appeal to people who didn’t play the first one, I’ve made the game nostalgic, but also new. I can’t say anymore than that right now.”

Death Stranding 2 is in development for PS5. It was recently announced that Death Stranding movie is also in the works.
