The upcoming Dead Space remake is looking to strike a fine balance between being a faithful recreation of the original and injecting new ideas, on both story and gameplay fronts. We’ve already seen a few examples of how the remake will be altering how certain sequences of the story play out while ensuring that the actual plot doesn’t every stray far from the original game, and in a new video uploaded by IGN, developer Motive Studio has revealed more details on that.

One particular scene from Dead Space that fans of the game will likely remember is the transformation of the USG Ishimura’s captain into a Necromorph. In the upcoming remake, it’ll play out a little differently. Rather than witnessing it from behind a glass screen, Isaac will now be in the room attempting to pull off the captain’s rig, when an infector will bust in and infect the captain’s body, causing the transformation (literally) right on top of Isaac. The scene then transitions into gameplay.

By the looks of it, it’s going to a much more visceral and violent scene, while Motive Studio has also added a number of atmospheric effects to heighten the tension, such as a low, thick layer of eerie fog. In the video, members of the development team talk about the process of how they conceptualized the reimagined scene, as well as filming, animations, adding visual effects, and more. Check out the video below.

Dead Space recently went gold, and is set to launch on January 27 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
