Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion Won’t Feature New Story Elements

Producer Yoshinori Kitase says it's "still positioned" as an expansion on the original FF7 story, and the team doesn't "want to stray too far from that."

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion, Square Enix’s upcoming remaster of the classic PSP title, sports several changes. Combat is smoother with linkable combos and Limit Breaks on demand, the game is fully voice-acted, and overall movement and camera systems are improved. It also features a new cast of voice actors compared to the original like Caleb Pierce, who voiced Zack in Final Fantasy 7 Remake, replacing Rick Gomez.

In an interview with IGN, producer Yoshinori Kitase said it was a question of “renewal.” “[S]ince Final Fantasy 7 was a title that has been beloved for 20 years, we wanted to ensure that with this renewed project, the Final Fantasy 7 Remake project, it would be loved for another 20 years to come. And so that’s when we invited a whole new cast of voice actors into the title.” Thankfully, fans can look forward to Briana White, who voiced Aerith in FF7 Remake and reprises her role here.

But don’t worry – everything else, particularly the story content, remains the same. As Kitase explains, “With the FF7 Remake, it was a new starting point for a Final Fantasy 7, and so we decided to expand the story. But the Crisis Core Reunion is a remaster and it’s still positioned as a story that expands on the original Final Fantasy 7 story. And so we didn’t want to stray too far from that.” There are currently “no plans” to add new elements whether it’s new side quests or additional storylines.

It wouldn’t be completely out of left field to feature a teaser for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the second part in the Remake trilogy, but we’ll need to wait and see. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion is slated for release this Winter on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS4, PS5, PC and Nintendo Switch.
