Final Fantasy 7 fans were treated to a bunch of major new announcement last week in a livestream celebrating the original game’s 25th anniversary, and while there was plenty shown off that grabbed the attention of many, one particular game that has generated a lot of buzz is Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion. Technically, it’s an HD remaster of the PSP-exclusive action RPG, but Square Enix is saying it’s more than just a simple remaster- and a new comparison video certainly seems to double down on that.

Uploaded by YouTuber ElAnalistaDeBits, a video comparing the original Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 with its upcoming remaster side-by-side showcases some mighty impressive visual leaps being made by the remaster, to the extent that it’s almost looking like a full-fledged remake (which it technically isn’t). Character models, environments, lighting, backgrounds, camera control, and more have seen massive upgrades- much more than you’d expect in even the most comprehensive remasters out there. It certainly seems to be going above and beyond- check it out below.

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion is due out this Winter for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Meanwhile, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth – the sequel to Final Fantasy 7 Remake – is due out next Winter exclusively for PS5, while the final instalment in the remake trilogy is also already in development.
