HBO’s The Last of Us has got off to a flying start, having enjoyed overwhelmingly positive reception from critics and audiences alike, which has also been reflected in the impressive viewership numbers it has managed with its first two episodes. Unsurprisingly, it’s now been confirmed that the show will continue past its first season.
HBO has announced that The Last of Us has been officially greenlit for a second season, as many had predicted would be happening soon.
Naughty Dog co-president, The Last of Us writer and director, and execucitve producer and writer on the show said: “I’m humbled, honored, and frankly overwhelmed that so many people have tuned in and connected with our retelling of Joel and Ellie’s journey. The collaboration with Craig Mazin, our incredible cast and crew, and HBO exceeded my already high expectations. Now we have the absolute pleasure of being able to do it again with Season 2! On behalf of everyone at Naughty Dog and PlayStation, thank you.”
Showrunner Craig Mazin added: “I’m so grateful to Neil Druckmann and HBO for our partnership, and I’m even more grateful to the millions of people who have joined us on this journey. The audience has given us the chance to continue, and as a fan of the characters and world Neil and Naughty Dog created, I couldn’t be more ready to dive back in.”
The Last of Us’ first season covers the entirety of the original game, as well as the events of its DLC, Left Behind, which means the second season will move on to the harrowing story of The Last of Us Part 2. Mazin has previously said that a single season is probably not going to be able to cover the entire story of the second game, so it remains to be seen how the show’s second season will be structured, and how much of the game it will cover.
